Jesus purpose

who is jesus

There is much debate over who Jesus was and what His true purpose was on earth. Was He simply a good man? A great teacher? A prophet? The Son of God?

The Bible makes it clear that Jesus was much more than a mere man. In fact, He was (and is) God in human form. Philippians 2:5-8 says, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!”

So from the Bible’s perspective, there is no doubt that Jesus was fully God and fully man. But why did He come to earth? What was His purpose?

The Bible tells us that Jesus came to earth to save sinners. In 1 Timothy 1:15 we read, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.” Jesus Himself said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10).

Ultimately, then, Jesus came to earth to bring forgiveness and eternal life to all who would believe in Him. If you have not yet placed your faith in Christ alone for salvation, we invite you to do so today.

what did he come to do

Most people think that Jesus went around teaching people about God. And while it’s true that he did teach about God, that wasn’t his primary mission. Jesus said himself that he didn’t come to be a teacher but a rescuer (see Luke 19:10).

Think about it. If all Jesus wanted to do was teach us about God, he could have done that without becoming a human being. He could have just dictated a book (or even tweeted!) and been done with it. But instead, he chose to come down to our level, to become one of us, so that he could save us from our sin.

The Bible says that “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son” (John 3:16). Why? So that anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. In other words, Jesus came to rescue us from death—physical death and spiritual death. And he did it by giving up his own life as a sacrificial substitute for ours.

how does that impact us

How does that impact us?

Christ’s purpose was to save us from our sin. He did this by dying on the cross in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve. When we turn from our sin and put our faith in Jesus, we are forgiven and given eternal life.
