What does it mean to inherit the kingdom of God?

The kingdom of God is not an earthly inheritance that can be passed down from generation to generation. It is a spiritual inheritance that can only be received by those who have been born again by the Spirit of God.

When we receive Christ as our Savior, we are born into His family and become heirs of His kingdom. We have not yet inherited the fullness of His kingdom, but we have been given the down payment of the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14). Someday, we will inherit the fullness of His kingdom when Christ comes again (1 Corinthians 15:50-54).

Inheriting the kingdom of God means more than just going to heaven when we die. It means living in intimate relationship with God now and having the hope of glorification in the future. When we inherit the kingdom of God, we receive eternal life—a life that begins now and will never end.

How to inherit the kingdom of God

In order to inherit the kingdom of God, we must first be born again. John 3:3 says, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” This is the first and most important step in inheriting the kingdom of God. We must be born again of the Spirit of God in order to see, enter, and inherit His kingdom.

Be born again

In order to inherit the kingdom of God, you must be born again.

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” -John 3:3

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”-John 3:6

“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”-John 3:5

Repent and believe the gospel

In order to inherit the kingdom of God, we must first repent of our sin and believe in the gospel. The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again, providing us with the hope of eternal life. When we repent, we turn away from our sin and turn towards God. We confess our need for forgiveness and ask Him to save us. We believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins and rose again, and we put our trust in Him alone for our salvation. We receive forgiveness and eternal life, and we become citizens of His kingdom.

Abide in Christ

In order to inherit the kingdom of God, we must abide in Christ. Christ is the Vine, and we are the branches (John 15:1-8). If we do not abide in Him, we will not bear fruit and will be cut off and burned (v. 6). We must remain in His love (v. 9-10), obey His commands (vv. 10-11), and bear much fruit (v. 8).
