In 1896, a group of conservatives who were members of the Winebrenner denomination broke away from that group because of its increasing liberalism on a number of issues. Among their grievances was the ordination of women, which they felt was contrary to Scripture. These conservatives formed the Church of God in Columbus, Ohio, with the goal of remaining true to their biblical convictions.

The Church of God is conservative in doctrine and practice and is a member of the Council of Conservative Churches. It remains affiliated with the Church of God, Anderson, Indiana. Beliefs

We believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant word of God and is our final authority in all matters of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21)

We believe that there is one true and living God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30)

We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary atoning death on the cross, His bodily resurrection from the dead, His ascension into heaven and His personal future return to earth in power and glory to judge the living and the dead. (Matthew 1:23; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 3:24-25)

We believe that man was created in God’s image but fell into sin and is therefore lost and subject to God’s wrath. Man cannot be saved by his own good works but only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. (Genesis 1:26-27; 3:6-7; Ephesians 2:8-9)

We believe that salvation is a free gift from God received by personal faith in Jesus Christ resulting in eternal life. (John 3:16; John 14:6; Romans 6:23)

We believe that Jesus Christ is head of the church, which consists of all those who have been born again by the Spirit. The church’s mission is to proclaim the gospel throughout the world. The church has been given spiritual gifts by which it functions for worship, fellowship, evangelism and edification under the lordship of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 15:3-4; Ephesians 4 :11-16 ; Matthew 28 : 18-20 )
