Early years
Christian feminism began in the 19th century with a woman named Sarah Grimké. Sarah was born into a wealthy, slave-holding family in South Carolina. She was raised a devout Christian and taught that all people were equal in God’s eyes. As an adult, she became an abolitionist and began working to end slavery. She also started speaking out about the need for women to have equal rights.

Sarah’s sister, Angelina Grimké, was also involved in the early days of Christian feminism. Angelina was also born into a wealthy, slave-holding family. However, she disagreed with her sister on the issue of slavery. Angelina believed that slavery was wrong and that it needed to be ended immediately. She became an outspoken opponent of slavery and worked tirelessly to end it.

During the early years of the feminist movement, many Christian women were expelled from their churches for speaking out about equality. This did not deter them from fighting for what they believed in. In 1848, Sarah Grimké and Angelina Grimké helped organize the first ever Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York. The convention was attended by both men and women and it helped to raise awareness about the need for gender equality.

20th century
In 1900, Emily Balch became involved in Christian feminism when she joined the Women’s Peace Crusade. The crusade was a response to the First World War and it called for an end to violence and war. Emily Balch became a leading voice within the crusade and she worked tirelessly to promote peace around the world. In 1946, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts.

Another significant event in 20th century Christian feminism was ordination of women as priests and bishops. This began happening slowly in various denominations from around 1930 onwards but gathered pace from 1970 onwards following Vatican II which said that “the Church must open its doors to all people”. In 1989 Barbara Harris became Episcopal church’s first woman bishop after being ordained by Bishop David Johnson against considerable opposition within his own diocese.. On 3 September 2017 Naomi Dupree became Episcopal priest making her both America’s first black female Episcopal priest Today there are many ordained female ministers across different denominations including Roman Catholicism where such ordination is still not possible.. In addition Pope Francis has indicated his support for studying whether or not women could serve as deacons within Catholicism which would represent a significant step forward even if stop short of full ordination.. Full ordination would require a change to Catholic doctrine which currently teaches that only men can be ordained..
